The World Society for the Protection of Animals
For 25 years WSPA, The World Society for the Protection of Animals, has travelled to the farthest flung reaches of the planet in the name of animal welfare.
Today, our presence in more than 140 countries is testament to our commitment to end all forms of animal suffering and cruelty.
Feet First For Animals
This June sees the launch of WSPA‘s 2006 Feet First For Animals campaign. Every year, our supporters get together to raise money for one of our animal welfare projects. Last year, we helped stray dogs in Phuket; this year, we are helping working elephants…
Mobile elephant clinic
The money we raise from this year‘s Feet First For Animals will fund a mobile elephant clinic operated by the Thailand National Elephant Institute (NEI).
The mobile clinic, sponsored by the RSPCA until 2003, has successfully provided veterinary treatment to working elephants in Northern Thailand for six years and covered over 300,000 km of ground in that time.
WSPA is enabling the clinic to maintain its vital work and has agreed to continue funding for a period of three years.
Why do working elephants need our help?
Captive elephants used as working or tourist animals are often victims of stress, poor husbandry and lack of veterinary care.
Elephants can also suffer injuries as a direct result of their work. There is currently no veterinary care, other than that provided by the NEI clinic, in Thailand.
The mobile clinic:
- Delivers veterinary care to sick and injured elephants in Thailand;
- Educates mahouts in proper care of their animals;
- Provides mahouts with basic veterinary advice, equipment and skills.
