The National Lottery

The UK gets set to celebrate National Lottery Day 2006

National Lottery funded projects across the UK will be joining together to host a series of special events, as part of this year’s National Lottery Day celebrations on Saturday 23 September. The BBC are also joining the celebrations by hosting a special National Lottery Day programme called “Everyone’s a winner”, hosted by Noel Edmonds.

Families will have the chance to celebrate National Lottery Day at thirteen unique events across the UK. From a festival of wildlife at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust headquarters at Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, to an action packed festival of sport at Bolton Arena, there is something for everyone.

Other events include an exciting day of interactive activities at Snibston Discovery Park in Leicestershire; a celebration of Welsh culture and history at The National Slate Museum in Wales; and a day of family fun at The Hub in Edinburgh, with the BBC stage showcasing dance groups, comedians and musical acts that have benefited from Lottery funding.

National Lottery Day highlights the impact Lottery funding has had across the UK and recognises the amazing things people have done with their Lottery grants to make a difference in their communities. Over £18.6 billion has been raised for National Lottery Good Causes in the last 12 years, and the day is also a chance to say “Thank You” to Lottery players by giving something back through celebrations around the UK.

Mike O’Connor CBE, Chair, England and UK-wide Lottery Forum said:
“We can talk about the billions of pounds raised and hundreds of thousands of projects supported but this does not provide a true picture of the difference this money has made to communities right across the UK. The real story and glory lies in the amazing achievements of the projects and people who are helping improve the lives of their communities. It is great to see so many of them taking part and celebrating their achievements for National Lottery Day - and thanking those who played along the way.”

As part of the celebrations and to say thank you to Lottery players there will also be a fantastic ticket giveaway. People will have the chance to win free tickets to Lottery funded events and attractions; from international rugby matches at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, to theatre tickets for performances during the Belfast Festival and family passes to The Eden Project, Tate Modern and the National Space Centre. These competitions will run on local BBC radio stations, and in local press from 18-23 September.

The winners of The National Lottery Awards 2006 will also be announced on National Lottery Day during “Everyone’s a winner” on BBC1. The Awards celebrate and recognise the wonderful things people have done with their Lottery grants, transforming the lives of communities and individuals throughout the UK.

There will be also be a special Lotto Superdraw on Saturday 23rd September with a guaranteed jackpot of £15 million available to win. The draw will feature in the BBC programme that night.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research.

With an annual scientific spend of £217 million, the registered charity funds over 3,000 world-class scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK. The organisation is making significant progress – thanks to earlier detection and improved treatments, survival rates have improved for nearly all cancers. But there is still so much more to do. To fund its vital long term research projects, Cancer Research UK needs regular support.

Supporters can set up a direct debit online for as little as £2 a month

Cancer affects us all in many ways. Mums, dads, sisters, aunts, uncles and friends alike. With your help new research can find better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer all the time. But this kind of progress needs continual support.

It’s only with your ongoing support that Cancer Research UK’s scientists can continue their vital long-term research and turn knowledge into revolutionary new treatments for cancer patients.

Groundbreaking research into diagnosing, preventing and treating cancer can take many years. That’s why it is so vitally important we can plan ahead and ensure we can fund long-term research projects as effectively as possible. We want to use your money wisely.

Giving a small amount every month by Direct Debit helps us save on administration costs and means that more of your money is spent on vital research. Because it matters to you, it matters to us.

Cancer is everyone’s problem. Everyone is the solution. Together we will beat cancer.

Shelter - Everyone should have a home

Shelter believes everyone should have a home. We help people find and keep a home. We campaign for decent housing for all.

We are the fifth richest country in the world, and yet millions of people in Britain wake up every day in housing that is run-down, overcrowded or dangerous. Many others have lost their home altogether. Bad housing robs us of security, health, and a fair chance in life.

Shelter believes everyone should have a home.

We help 100,000 people a year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home. We also tackle the root causes of bad housing by campaigning for new laws, policies, and solutions.

We can’t do it on our own - your help and support is crucial if we are going to make our vision a reality. You can help by supporting our work through a donation, or a regular Direct Debit.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals

For 25 years WSPA, The World Society for the Protection of Animals, has travelled to the farthest flung reaches of the planet in the name of animal welfare.

Today, our presence in more than 140 countries is testament to our commitment to end all forms of animal suffering and cruelty.

Feet First For Animals

This June sees the launch of WSPA‘s 2006 Feet First For Animals campaign. Every year, our supporters get together to raise money for one of our animal welfare projects. Last year, we helped stray dogs in Phuket; this year, we are helping working elephants…

Mobile elephant clinic

The money we raise from this year‘s Feet First For Animals will fund a mobile elephant clinic operated by the Thailand National Elephant Institute (NEI).

The mobile clinic, sponsored by the RSPCA until 2003, has successfully provided veterinary treatment to working elephants in Northern Thailand for six years and covered over 300,000 km of ground in that time.

WSPA is enabling the clinic to maintain its vital work and has agreed to continue funding for a period of three years.

Why do working elephants need our help?

Captive elephants used as working or tourist animals are often victims of stress, poor husbandry and lack of veterinary care.

Elephants can also suffer injuries as a direct result of their work. There is currently no veterinary care, other than that provided by the NEI clinic, in Thailand.

The mobile clinic:

  • Delivers veterinary care to sick and injured elephants in Thailand;
  • Educates mahouts in proper care of their animals;
  • Provides mahouts with basic veterinary advice, equipment and skills.
